(a) If you purchase a phone or card in Spain, you will have a Spanish phone number. This means calls to you from outside Spain will be long distance for the caller. But fellow pilgrims can reach you in Spain for local call costs and you can call in Spain for local costs.
(b) If you are traveling in a group, consider sharing a phone. Buy one SIM card or let each person have their own and switch them in the phone to make calls.
(c) You can call a loved one from your phone and have them return the call immediately if they have a special long distance rate. This is what we did to be able to take advantage of our low rates at home.
